An African leather shield of rectangular form, with wooden handle, 91 by 26cm, together with a drinking horn and collection of spears and weapons, used by indigenous nomadic hunters of the Pokot and Tamkal tribal communities of the Mwino Valley, Kenya in the mid-late 20th century Provenance: from a collection of items gifted to the Revered Canon Philip Price (British, 1925-2010) from the Pokot and Tamkal tribal communicates as a mark of respect and thanks for his ministry and good works. Philip's son records how, as a child growing up in the Mwino Valley, he recalls 'most of the men I saw would have a blanket (skuka) tied on one shoulder, be carrying a spear and head stool, sometimes with shield and bow and arrows, and be nomadic walking around the territory.' See a copy of the document signed and sealed by Leonard Mombassa, née Beecher, Archbishop of the Province of East Africa, from 1960 to 1970, recording the gift of the items to Price. Note: Proceeds from the sale will go directly to the people of the Mwino Valley, contributing to relief efforts in response to recent devastating floods.
