** WINCANTON (WILTS.) - LETTER TO PAROLE P.O.W. BUT HELD IN PARIS P.O.'s "CABINET NOIR"; 7 Dec. 1806 EL (unsealed; a brief note from the addressee's father ref. having had no news for 6 months) from "Marcigny" to; "M. Francois Henry de Grenadiers du 2eme Regiment de Ligne et Officier de la Legion d'Honneur fait Prisonnier de Guerre, a bord du Vaisseau le Mont Blanc en Cautionnement a Wincanton" with two fine "P.70.P/MARCIGNY" on the front beside a fine red Paris "P.P.P.P." mark alongside m/s "franche" and having the "15cms" prepaid rate on reverse, but clearly never delivered - letters sent soon after Napoleon's suspension of Mail exchange from 21 Nov. 1806 are thought to have remained in the Paris P.O.'s Secret Office ("Cabinet Noir") - with distinctive flattened oval red wax (censor's) seal in the middle of the inner sheet.
