BACKGROUND HISTORY:
The son of Jonathan Hargreaves and Anna Maria Hargreaves depicted in these two portraits was Reginald Gervis Hargreaves and he married Alice Liddell (of Alice in Wonderland).
Alice Pleasance Hargreaves Liddell (1852 – 1934), was, in her childhood, an acquaintance and photography subject of Lewis Carroll. Ref.photos.
One of the stories he told her during a boating trip became the children's classic 1865 novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The rest is history.
Reginald Gervis Hargreaves married Alice Liddell in 1880 at Westminster Abbey.
To conclude the relative of Anna Maria Hargreaves recently visited us at the Lenkiewicz Auctions to view the portraits.
The girl in the photo is also called Alice after her relative Alice Liddell and the similarities are striking.
