The Series III had the same body and engine options as the preceding Series IIa. The Series III is the most common Series vehicle, with 440,000 of the type built from 1971 to 1985. The traditional metal grille was replaced with a plastic one for the Series III model, and the 2.25-litre engine had its compression raised from 7:1 to 8:1, increasing the power slightly. During the Series III production run the 1,000,000th Land Rover rolled off the production line in 1976. This was the first model to feature synchromesh on all four gears, and the simple metal dashboard of earlier models was redesigned to accept a new moulded plastic dash. In 1980, the 2.25-litre petrol and diesel engines received five main bearing crankshafts to increase rigidity and the transmission, axles and wheel hubs were strengthened.
A charming Land Rover Series 3, 88inch Utility home market Diesel. This is a very original Series 3 Land Rover. The paintwork is thin but nearly all original, and the bulkhead and chassis are sound. The windows, tilt frame, and canvas tilt are all present with their nuts and bolts, but the canvas really needs renewing. It has a matching set of good wheels and tyres, and the spare is unused. It also has free wheel hubs, and a recent new battery.
Overall a very characterful and original truck to use or improve.
