ABOUT ARTIST

Born and bred in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dalila is a graduate of University of Johannesburg (ex Wits Technikon) and UNISA where she studied Architecture and a BA majoring in History of Art. She also graduated from Boston House College with a diploma in Interiors. Although she has a formal design and art appreciation background, she is largely self-taught (although she does take the occasional workshop to develop new ways of thinking). She is known for her colourful, textured and layered mixed media works. She considers herself primarily an experimental artist in that the process of producing art is as important as the emotions or the subject that inspires it!
De Matos’ current work reflects her interest in matters that relate to being human in a world that has changed! She has always been inspired by people and never more so than now, when random acts of kindness and humanity need to be celebrated! Her process involves layers of text/collage, texture, paint and found objects that are used to bring attention to and inspire dialogue about issues that directly affect the artist and the people and environments she is in relationship with. Her aim is to produce work that is contemporary, contextual and celebrates people’s experiences. It is the choices made at each layer that informs the next, allowing de Matos to process her feelings and thoughts regarding the people and world around her. Many artists throughout History have been an inspiration but de Matos feels that Goya, Picasso, Andrew Salgado and Kentridge are currently her strongest influences.
She has participated in over 43 group exhibitions locally and abroad. She has been honourably mentioned at the GTC Portrait Awards in 2018, won the Mixed Water Media Category at the First International Exhibition of the IWSSA in 2018 and won best Portrait at the SA Drawing Guilds Annual Exhibition 2021. She has been featured in five issues of the South African Artist’s Magazine. She has had a very successful two-person exhibition at Upstairs at Bamboo and has participated in numerous local and international the exhibitions. Her work is part of corporate and private collections both locally and abroad as well as part of the permanent collection of the City of Johannesburg.
