German painter and graphic artist of the 20th century. Student of Adolf Hölzel, considered a pioneer of abstract painting. Began an apprenticeship as a porcelain modeller, from 1906 on the recommendation of Henry van de Velde in the arts and crafts seminar in Weimar. Worked with marble and stone. From 1908 in Richard Müller's drawing class in Dresden, from 1909 with Franz von Stuck at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Became a student of Adolf Hölzel there, interested in abstract painting. Participation in the exhibition of the Üecht group. In the 1920s in Stuttgart, teaching workshop for contemporary art, contact with the dancer and choreographer Rudolf von Laban from Monte Verita in Ascona. Member of the athletics team, created several sports pictures. In Paris he met Adolf Loos. 1928 contact with George Grosz and Wassily Kandinsky in the Kunsthaus Schaller, 1929 participation in the exhibition for the Vagabond Congress in Stuttgart. From 1930 he directed a seminar for Absolute painting in Stuttgart, in 1932 he exhibited with Ernst Heinrich Graeser and Hans Molfenter. From 1936 in the Höri district, moved to Hornstaad on Lake Constance and painted in Hemmenhofen. In 1937 five pictures by Ackermann were confiscated from the Württemberg State Gallery in Stuttgart as degenerate art. From 1951 member of the German Association of Artists. Initially veristic and socially critical painting, interested in communism. Development in the direction of abstract painting and constructivism, is considered a painter of the color blue. Extensive graphic work, especially screen prints in collaboration with Luitpold Domberger, Hans-Peter Haas and Roland Geiger. Also nudes, interest in dance, shapes and color surfaces.
