Rowland Hill, Lord of Hawkstone was a distinguished officer in the Napoleonic War, particularly on the Peninsula with Wellington to whom he was second in command in 1815. His successes were commemorated in Shrewsbury by the erection of the Lord Hill Column, said to be the highest Doric column in the world.
