An album of photographs and correspondence concerning Samuel Woodward's work in minute calligraphy, (both longhand and shorthand) with four original pen sketches of Lord Beaconsfield, President Garfield, Sir Abraham Woodiwiss, and H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, and three textual examples, including the Lord's Prayer and the Life of Lord Beaconsfield, a further twelve mounted carte-de-visite style photographs of minute calligraphy, further regional press cuttings, c.1881, and approx. 20 autographed letters, most with associated envelopes, thanking Woodward for sending examples of his work, including autographed letters from Randolph Churchill and Abraham Woodiwiss, and others signed on behalf of the recipient, contemporary morocco, 8vo, c. 1881


Samuel Woodward was the publisher of the Phonographic Meteor, based in Derby. In an attempt to promote his work as a stenographer, Wood wrote to numerous individuals he deemed influential. One response, from the politician Ralph Disraeli, typifies many, '27 May 1881.
