Signed 'By Sir Henry De la Beche, geologist' on reverse.

11.5 x 5.5 cm

This small sketch is believed to be by renowned English geologist and palaeontologist Henry De la Beche. ‘By Sir Henry De la Beche, geologist’ is pencilled on the reverse. The drawing also shares similarities with sketches in ‘Sections and Views, Illustrative of Geological Phaenomena’ by De la Beche, including flocks of birds in several of the landscape-scale figures. The drawing has been previously sold at auction as a work by Henry De la Beche.

Henry De la Beche was an eminent English geologist and palaeontologist who went on to become the first director of the Geological Survey of Great Britain. He is particularly well-known for his work on the geology of Devon and Cornwall. He was an avid fossil collector and a great supporter of Mary Anning. He illustrated many great works including Duria Antiquior.
