AUSTEN, Jane (1775-1817). [Novels], 4 vol., introductions by Austin Dobson, illustrations by Hugh Thomson, London, New York: Macmillan and Co., 1896-1906. Sense and Sensibility, first Macmillan edition, “Peacock Series”, endpapers with Peacock design in yellow, contemporary inscription on half-title, original publisher’s decorative burgundy binding lettered with elaborate blocked gilt decoration to upper board and spine, design by A.A. Turbayne, 1896; together with, Mansfield Park, reprint 1898; Emma, reprint 1904; Northanger Abbey/Persuasion, reprint 1906, half-titles, frontispieces with tissue guards and full-page illustrations by Hugh Thomson, advertisements at end, all edges gilt, publisher’s uniform red cloth lettered in gilt to spines, 8vo (13.5 x 19cm). (4) Sense and Sensibility – boards very slightly cocked, light marks to lower board, spine ends and corners rubbed and bumped, toning to tissue guard, and some darkening in places to Peacock design endpapers, otherwise internally, a clean copy. Mansfield Park, Emma, and Northanger Abbey/Persuasion – light marks to boards, corners and spine ends rubbed and bumped, some foxing to endpapers, otherwise internally clean copies.
