A rare and documented Charles II pewter OEWS half-pint hammerhead baluster measure, circa 1660

Having a plain body, and ownership triad ‘H’ over ‘H E’ to lid, height 12.8cm

Provenance: With Howard H. Cotterell, sold with ‘Genuineness label’ and certificate no. 1383.  Former Melvyn H. Rollason Collection

Literature: Illustrated H.H. Cotterell, ‘Old Pewter Makers and Marks’, (1929), p. 78, pl. XIII (second from left)

Exhibited: ‘Daily Telegraph Exhibition’, Olympia. London, July 19 to August 1, 1928. It is possible the measure is illustrated on the second shelf of ‘Dresser A’, illustration i, ‘Catalogue of the Exhibition’.  Unfortunately, no distinction is made with regard to the types of measures illustrated, most are noted as belonging Walter Churcher and it would appear the measure entered Rollason’s collection in 1934, six years after the Telegraph Exhibition
