Richard Polwhele (editor 1760-1838). 'Poems Chiefly by Gentlemen of Devonshire and Cornwall,' 1792. 2 volumes, half title, woodcut vignettes, marbled boards, with black morocco label, Richard Polwhele chiefly remembered as the topographer of Devon and Cornwall, was born at truro and educated at the grammar school, in 1782 he became curate of Kenton near Powderham Castle, Devonshire a post he continued to occupy until 1793, many of the gentry were imbued with literary tastes and Polwhele joined a literary society at Exeter that held ‘’meetings at the Globe Tavern every three weeks at one o’clock, recited literary compositions in prose and verse and dined at three’’ good condition scarce, R.Cruttwell, Bath,1792.
