A NGUZU NGUZU CANOE FIGUREHEAD, SOLOMON ISLANDS.
Carved walnut with mother of pearl inlay. (h 26cm x w 17cm x d 9cm).
Provenance: Private English collection, kept in the family since 1960. The owner grew up in the Solomon Islands as her father worked there with the airlines. Her mother M P Carter donated a collection of objects from Pacific islands to The British Museum in 1996. All items were sourced directly from locals and brought through cooperatives, not through tourist markets. Other items such as shells were collected on the beach in the 1970s, mostly in Fiji, but also in many other South Pacific Islands.
