RARE QV "PATTERN POST" IMPRINT/ENDORSED 8d OR 2d-RATE LABEL/COVER TO ITALY/GERMANY; 1869 thick card front from a heavy package sent from Dundee to Livorno with the address label having "Per PATTERN POST/FROM W.R. MORISON & CO." imprints, franked by 2d Blue (pl.12) + 6d Mauve (pl.8; wing margin creased over edge at top) tied by fair Dundee duplexes for the 8d (above 4oz & up to 8oz) Patterns rate. There is also fine red oval London "PD"; Morison & Co. are recorded as having been "spinners & manufacturers" at this date, so the contents were almost certainly some kind of material. Plus 27 Feb. 1886 open-ended wrapper to Saxony endorsed "Pattern Post" with a 2d Dull Lilac tied by a very fine "MANCHESTER" Squared Circle. Very few QV Pattern Post covers have been recorded. Rare pair. [The Dundee item illustrated in BPPP, p.495.] (2 covers)Cross Reference: OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS, 1858-69 2d PLATES, LANCASHIRE - MANCHESTER, SCOTLAND
