Mabel Young was the student and second wife of Paul Henry RHA. Born on the Isle of Wight in 1889, she came to Dublin in 1914 to assist her sister, who was then housekeeper of the Shelbourne Hotel. In 1924, whilst on a holiday in Wicklow, she met Paul Henry and with his encouragement and advice began painting. Four years later she exhibited at the RHA, showing thirty two works there over the following years until 1961. Other exhibitions were held at Combridges and in the Shelbourne, and she was included in the 1953 Contemporary Irish Art exhibition at Aberystwyth in Wales. In 1962 she had a one-person show at the Ritchie Hendiks Gallery in Dublin. Her works are included in many private and public collections including the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, Dublin. She became famous for her paintings of trees.
