£600 - £800
A good quality Scottish late 18th century eight-day longcase clock with annual calendar by John Cleland of Edinburgh - the arched brass dial signed to a plate to the arch, within gilt-brass dolphin spandrels, the silvered Roman chapter ring enclosing a matted centre with silvered subsidiary seconds dial and a curved annual calendar aperture, within foliate scroll and rocaille spandrels, fronting a bell strike movement with four knopped pillars, the case with panelled swan-neck cornice over tapered, fluted columns, the trunk with conforming quarter columns flanking a serpentine arched and boxwood-strung door in flame mahogany, over a crossbanded base with bracket feet, 220 cm high.
* Unrestored and in good condition overall with a nice patina and colour. The hood has a slight shrinkage crack to the right hand side. Dial in good condition and very original. Trunk door slightly warped and lacks key. There is a large vertical split to the front of the base and another to the right hand side. The left side has some damp spotting to the polish. Small chip to front left foot. The seatboard appears to be original. The case and movement are possibly an (old) match, as there are old packing pieces raising the seatboard up above the case cheeks. This appears to be a very old alteration. Complete with pendulum and cast iron weights. The clock was not running when seen in situ at the owner's house, so we cannot verify if it is in working order or may require some work.
