A GEORGE IV GOLD AND CARNELIAN SEAL FOR VICE ADMIRAL SIR HENRY BLACKWOOD BT, CIRCA 1800
the fluted gold mount set with a carnelian seal engraved with the coat of arms for Vice Admiral Sir Henry Blackwood, 1st Baronet GCH KCB -- 1½in. (4cm.) high
The Hon Henry Blackwood (1770-1832) became a close and reliable functionary to Lord Nelson in the run up to and at the Battle of Trafalgar. Offered command of a Line of Battle ship, Blackwood declined it to remain with the Euryalus (36) and as such effectively became Victory's dispatch vessel. Blackwood was constantly in conference with Nelson and, with Captain Hardy, was witness to the ignored codicil to Nelson's will. He was then ordered to return to his ship: 'God bless you, Blackwood,' said Nelson, shaking him by the hand; 'I shall never speak to you again.' After the battle, Blackwood returned to the United Kingdom with dispatches and the captured French Admiral Villeneuve and his suite. He attended Nelson's funeral in January 1806 as train bearer to the chief mourner, Sir Peter Parker.
