A Gandharan carved schist panel, circa 3rd century. Depicting five female figures in robes, the central figure with a child, height 15cm, width 20cm, depth 5cm. This Gandhara relief actually shows the birth of the Buddha out of the side of his mother, Maya, in the grove at Lumbini, she clutching the branch of one of the trees.The god Indra attended the birth, he is the one to her right delivering the baby, with the disc (halo) behind his head, the others to her left are her female attendants.
