Provenance: Purchased by a private collector from a descendant of Thornton, from whom purchased by the current owner.
Frank Thornton, a 1916 veteran, IRA intelligence officer and one of Michael Collins' closest associates was a member of the 'Squad', Collins' counter intelligence unit. He was closely involved in the planning of the 'Bloody Sunday' assassinations of British intelligence operatives.
