GUISEPPE CARELLI (1858-1921) The Bay of Naples, signed, oil on panel, 8 1/4 x 15 in

Guseppe Carelli came from a family of successful artists all belonging to the School of Posillipo. He painted a number of variants of this view. cf for instance a painting with Casa d'Aste Vincent 6 Nov 2010 lot 239; or Skinner , USA 20 May 2011 lot 394

The building depicted on the left at the water's edge is the Palazzo Donn'Anna. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the grand but decaying Baroque building proved to be a popular subject for artists and amongst travellers visiting the nearby villa that had belonged to the diplomat Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803).
