BRADFORD/KEIGHLEY 1780 MISSENT (4/- RATE!) + MILL STRIKE POSTER SENT WITH 1841 1d RED: 1780 EL from London to "KIldwick Craven" rated at "1oz½ 2N" but with "BRADFORD/Y" endorsed "MIfsent to" on the front & returned to London with very high ("In all 4N") total charge. Plus 9 Sept. 1846 large folded printed SHORT TIME Notice EL with 1d Red ex Halifax to Keighley mill-owner Robert Clough (Grove Mill) before being widely circulated to his employees. Local newspapers of the time record that the previous week, the very poorly paid woolcombers in the employ of Mr. Robert Clough of Keighley had struck for advance [pay-rise] of a farthing a pound (a mere ¼d out of 240d, or 0.1%!), but that the result is the turning out of all [the mills] combers, for the purpose of forcing Mr. Cloughs men to go in again. Unusual pair. (2 covers) Cross Reference: MISSENT MAIL, 1841 1d REDS, PRINTED MATTER
