ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARA JACOBSEN (AMERICAN, 1850-1921)

The G. Milne & Co Barque 'Inverlochy' under full sail, 1896

Signed and dated 'A. Jacobsen 1896' (lower right), inscribed with the title (lower middle)

Oil on canvas

21½ x 35½in. (54.5 x 90cm.)

Acquired from Stuart & Saunders Antiques Dealers, Hastings, 1968, for £115.

George Milne’s Inver Line commissioned a splendid fleet of fourteen very similar steel barques between 1889 and 1902, Inverlochy being one of three identical sisters built by Russell & Co. of Port Glasgow in 1895. Each was registered at 1,472 tons gross (1,339 net) and measured 238 feet in length with a 36 foot beam. Despite the strength of her steel hull, Inverlochy’s career was a short one when she was wrecked on the Ingoldsby Reefs, off Split Point, Victoria (Australia) whilst inbound for Melbourne from Liverpool in December 1902 due to a serious navigational error by her master.

relined by Stacy-Marks in May 1969. Slight retouching around the edges and a little on the front sail.
