Soloman Cole (British, 1806-1893)
Portrait of Joseph Stinton
signed to reverse, oil on canvas
74 x 62cm (29in x 24.5in)
Footnote: Cole exhibited 17 portraits at the Royal Academy. Cole started work as a ceramic painter in the Worcester porcelain factories in 1821 as a pupil of the world renowned porcelain painter, Thomas Baxter.
This portrait is likely to be that of a member of the Stinton family, who were working at the Worcester porcelain factories around the same time, and went on to become the pre-eminent porcelain decorators at the Worcester factory, well into the 20th century. It is also interesting to note that Solomon Cole's first born son was christened John Stinton Cole.
