A RARE, FINE AND DOCUMENTED CHARLES II PEWTER OEWS PINT HAMMERHEAD BALUSTER MEASURE, CIRCA 1670. Having a plain body, ownership triad 'H' over 'H E' struck three time to lid and once to strap handle, dated maker's mark 'W D' (PS3045) and Crowned 'C' mark to rim, height 16.4cm
Provenance:
With Howard H. Cotterell, sold with 'Genuineness label' and certificate no. 1382.
Former Melvyn H. Rollason Collection
Literature: Illustrated H. H. Cotterell, 'Old Pewter Makers and Marks', (1929), p. 78, pl. XLVIa (second from left). See also the 'Connoisseur', August 1919
Exhibited: 'Daily Telegraph Exhibition', Olympia. London, July 19 to August 1, 1928. Exhibition label to underside of lid. It is possible this baluster measure is illustrated on the second shelf of 'Dresser A', illustration i, in the 'Catalogue of the Exhibition'. Unfortunately, no distinction is made with regard to the types of measures illustrated, most are noted as belonging to Walter Churcher and it would appear the measure entered Rollason's collection in 1934, six years after the Telegraph Exhibition.
