After Katsushika Hokusai (C1830-1832) Under the Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa Oki nami ura), also know as the Great Wave, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuiji (Fugaku Sanjurokkei). 45 cm x 33 cm, actual woodblock 37.5 cm x 24.5 cm. Note: In late 19th century, Japanese prints were exported in large quantities to Europe and America and created a craze called Japanism, influencing the fine and decorative arts. The Impressionist artists such as Degas (1834-1917) Van Gogh (1853-1890) and Monet (1840-1926) were among those whose works were significantly inspired by their colour, composition, flatness and subject-matter; Hokusai's 'great wave' is the most famous of them all and one of the few prints universally admired in both Eastern and Western worlds.
