Montague Brown - Hovelt was born in Hanger Hill, Ealing, in 1879. At the time of the 1911 census, he was living at 37 Nassan Road, Barnes in Surrey.
A wealthy Shipping Merchant in civilian life, Brown - Hovlet was commissioned from a Cadet on the 18th of March 1918 to a Second Lieutenant in the Army Service corps. He landed in France on the 5th of April 1918. He survived the war and was discharged on the 3rd of June 1919.
