Shipibo terracotta pottery vessel, 20th C, geometric patterns in brown and red surround a face with protruding features and a set of hands. 19cm high, 7cm opening diameter.
Acquired in 1984 while the owner was living and working in Lima, Peru. Purchased at Maroti Shobo in Pucallpa, a commercial centre for the Shipibo-Conibo people of the Amazon, alongside the Ucayali river.
The traditional open-fired clay pottery is crafted by women, with skills passed down through the generations.
