CORFU 1853 - CROWNED CIRCLE IN BLACK "PAID/AT/CORFU" on 8 Mar. 1853 EL (overall light toning; some ink-through as thin paper) to Cephalonia with red m/s "5[d]" rate and small Corfu cds alongside. Unusual usage on inter-island mail. Also remarkable cloth bag sent from Corfu? to Santa Maura with silver/gold coins c.1860 (remains of red wax seals across the centre where it had been secured with cord during transit) addressed to "ATTE 229, Sta Maura" (ATTE being the firm of Petros Stamatopoulos Bros.) & possibly a faint partial "OFFICIO DELLA POSTA GENERALE CORFU" on the back. Rare example of special package for coins sent by post between the islands [acquired from a descendant of the Stamatopoulos family]. (2 items) Cross Reference: G.B USED ABROAD STAMPS & COVERS, REGISTERED MAIL
