HMS Association, wrecked on the Outer Gilstone on the Isles of Scilly, 22 October 1707 A bronze sheave pulley wheel, 19cm diameter and 5cm deep, weighing 5.65g This was not part of a conventional pulley block, but inset into the actual upper or topmast itself, allowing either the mast to be lowered or one of the upper yardarms. Upper and topmasts were frequently lowered in severe weather conditions to reduce windage, so this sheave was part of the ship’s structure.
