A pair of officer’s 16 bore percussion boxlock sidehammer belt pistols, c 1845, 9¾” overall, octagonal barrels 4” with traces of “Braggs, 43 High Holborn, London”; London proved; scroll engraved frames, hammers, and trigger guards, the number “362” engraved on the trigger guards and stamped on the lower frame straps; the finely chequered rounded walnut butts having oval silver escutcheons engraved with crest and motto, and with flared bases having engraved silver bands and escutcheons with monogram “AHHM”; with 3” steel belt hooks on left side, and swivel ramrods. GWO & C (lightly pitted and worn, base of one butt battered, one action requires slight attention). Note: Braggs were at 43 High Holborn only from 1843-1847. The crest and motto belong only to the Mercer family. A Lieutenant A H H Mercer was gazetted in 1847, and gazetted Major in the 89th Foot in 1856. Plate 7
