President. 1840-41 Entire letters carried by the British & American Steam Navigation Co. "President", comprising Aug. 31st letter from New York (Aug 31) to Scotland carried on the first return voyage with "8" charge and Liverpool Ship Letter, Sep. 30th letter from London to Virginia carried on the second voyage prepaid 8d with London and New York Ship datestamps, and 1841 (Feb 4) letter prepaid 8d from London to New York carried on her third and final voyage, a little toned. Also a printed handbill "Melancholy Fate of the President Steam Ship" with an illustration and poem, printed in London. The "President" was the world's largest steamer when launched in 1839, but only completed two transatlantic crossings in both directions, disappearing without trace on the third return voyage. (4).
