The entire panel measuring 32.5 x 12 inches. Joseph Mellor Hanson was the maternal uncle of our client, this painting has remained in our clients private collection for the last 50 years. Born in West Riding, Yorkshire,Hanson trained at the Halifax School of Art. In 1925, Hanson left England to study and work in Paris during the height of Modernism and was taught by Fernand Leger. Hanson spent a further eight years working in France as an assistant to Amedee Ozenfant and to Le Corbusier on numerous mural projects. Hanson moved to the United States in 1938, and kept a studio in New York. In 1945, Hanson received an appointment as an instructor at Cornell University where he remained on the faculty until his death in 1963. His work is in several museum collections in the United States and England, including MoMA, The Met, the National Gallery of Wales, and Bankfield Museum in Halifax
