Cromwell. 1653 (June 9) Entire letter from Robert Lilburne at Dalkeith, addressed "For his Excy General Cromwell these, Hast Hast att Whitehall". Lilburne complains of a shortage of stores, there being less than 700 barrels of powder in all of Scotland; he asks for further stores to be sent, money for the forces and victuals for ships. Lilburne, a Commissioner at the trial of Charles I, was one of the 59 who signed the King's death warrant; he was sentenced to death in 1660, commuted to life imprisonment. A rare "Hast Hast" endorsement on a Commonwealth letter from Scotland to Oliver Cromwell. Photo on Page 30.
