Attributed to Jan Swart Van Groningen (Dutch c.1500-c.1560) A hermit, possibly St Jerome, in a oil on oak panel, 29.5 x 24.5 cm, in a typical moulded Dutch frame, 53 x 47 cm The attribution is due to Max Friedlander in 1948. Provenance Kunsthandel Leo Blumenreich, Berlin, c. 1928 (as per RKD). Hans W. Lange, Berlin, auction 6-7 December 1937 (consignor H.E. von Scheven, Potsdam). Literature 'Zu Jan Swart van Groningen', Oud Holland, 63 (1948) p. 6, no. 2, reproduced fig. 4. Slight warping of the panel evident. Fine craquelure throughout the surface, leading to some slight blistering of the surface, particularly in the sky. Small area of paintloss on the skull. Some deposits to the painted surface.
