A BRITISH HEAVY CAVALRY OFFICER's SWORD BY WILKINSON MADE FOR LT.COL SYKES WHO COMMANDED THE DENBIGH YEOMANRY. Wit an 89cm pointed, single edged sharpened blade and fullered blade decorated with foliage and VR monogram to both sides, with initials HPS beneath a crest of a swan beneath the motto 'Puritas Fons Honoris & Sykes', numbered 28306 (number slightly obscured). Marked for Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall, London. With With broad decoratively pierced and engraved guard with wire bound leather grip, with sword knot. In nickle plated scabbard with twin ring suspension. 105cm.
Lt Col Harold Platt Sykes of Longford Hall, Newport commanded the Denbigh Yeomanry during the First World War having previously served in the 2nd Dragoon Guards during the Boer War where he took part in the Relief of Mafeking. *CR An attractive sword, possibly refurbished by Wilkinson prior to the First World War, occasional marking and occasional nicks to the blade.
