[Reynolds, Sir Joshua]. A Discourse delivered to the Students of the Royal Academy on the Distribution of Prizes, Dec. 10 1790 by the President. Quarto, as issued, stitched but unbound, (iv), 31 pp, laid paper. Outer leaves soiled and bruised, some corners turned, some foxing. Issued at three shillings, which was a substantial amount in 1790. Rare in this state. Reynolds was the first President of the Royal Academy, founded in 1768 as a self-governing institute of artists, and held that position until his death in 1792. He was regarded as the greatest British portrait painter of the age. His Discourse is mainly a tribute to Michelangelo
