A 32 bore percussion duelling pistol by Joseph Manton, number 8832 (1821),15" overall, heavy browned octagonal twist barrel 10" with dovetailed silver bead fore sight, breech having single platinum line and Manton's poincon, with rearsight on the engraved breech tang, the underneath of the barrel bearing London proofs and the initials "CL" (Charles Lancaster); signed bolted lock engraved with fern tip border and scrolls; walnut halfstock with rounded chequered butt, horn fore end cap, silver barrel wedge plates and escutcheon, and steel mounts including trigger guard engraved with trophies and serial number and with pineapple finial, and small domed butt cap; with plain horn tipped ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition. Given the early date this pistol was probably converted from tube lock by the maker, which could explain the slightly unusual hammer. Plate 37
