A New Zealand burr totara wood and specimen parquetry box, by James Annear of Wellington, third quarter 19th century; the hinged cover, front, back and sides all with broad banded edge borders; with recessed brass swing handle at each end; the interior tray with (later) blue velvet lining; a printed paper label within inscribed JAMES ANNEAR Maker, SYDNET STREET, WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND; 15cm high, 24cm wide, 24cm deep NOTE: James Annear (1814-83) arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, in August 1840, and soon established his highly regarded cabinetmaking business. As would be expected, he favoured the use of locally growing timbers -thought exotic in Great Britain. The Museum of New Zealand / Te Papa Tongarewa holds a number of examples of his work, most of which utilise totara wood.
