Twelve carnelian, green and blue agate set rings, including some also set with marcasite, many stamped 'silver'.

We are pleased to be offering this lot from the stock of family run firm Shipton and Co., who were based in Hastings White Rock area, and who were unfortunately forced to close their doors in 2014 after a section of the rock face above collapsed onto their shop, making the building unsafe. Found the world over agate is a stone that has been used for jewellery and decorative purposes since ancient times.  In Roman mythology green agate glorifies the Roman Earth goddess Aurora who is goddess of the dawn, fertility, and the mother of the winds. In modern times green agate is celebrated by those who believe it has the ability to restore balance when we feel off-kilter, and is thought to inspire good health, a friendly disposition, and bravery.  The colour blue is thought to encourage feelings of calmness and tranquility.  Carnelian is a type of agate that is found in red and orange hues. The name is thought to come from the Latin words carnis (meat) or carne (flesh) due to its color.  The ancient Egyptians prized it for being a stone of fertility to stimulating passion and even to provide courage to the ancient warriors and fighters.  In more modern times it has been worn to indicate status in society.
