ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM ARTAUD (1763-1823) A portrait of Henry Wansey FSA of Warminster

depicted half-length, seated wearing a black jacket, oil on canvas, 74cm x 61cm

Note: Henry Wansey (1751-1827) was an English antiquary, who was by trade a clothier, but retired from business in middle life and devoted his leisure to travel,  literature, and to antiquarian research. He was a member of the Bath
and West of England Agricultural Society, in which he served the office of vice-president. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and published a renowned work regarding his travels to America: 'The Journal of an Excursion to the United States of North America in the Summer of 1794'. He also worked on numerous more local papers, including for some years working with Sir Richard Colt Hoare to prepare the account of the hundred of Warminster, for Hoare's History of Wiltshire. This painting is passed down by family descent via his nephew, George Wansey of Warminster (1785-1858), and has long been attributed to William Artaud.
