Medieval Reliquary Pendant. Circa, 15th-16th century AD. Copper-alloy, 41mm x 34mm. 13.9g. A heart-shaped pendant (capsule) detailed on both sides with the letters Ihr over a field of incised lines. Used to hold a relic (saintly remains) or fragment of an Agnus Dei (discs of wax impressed with a lamb and blessed by the Pope). It is thought that these capsules may have been of continental manufacture and used by Catholic recusants in Protestant England. A piece of paper has been placed inside for display purposes.
