NICARAGUA - MAIL FROM A MARINE AT GREYTOWN; 29 Nov. 1858 EL (minor faults) to Twickenham franked 6d Lilac (wing margin) tied by London numeral with London cds of 1.1.1859 on rear. From Lt Heslop written on the HMS Valorous who writes 'I am afraid I shall have to send my letters unpaid, as there are no postage stamps to be got anywhere but at Jamaica, and when we left we got all that were at the Post Office....' Fine contemporary reporting on the difficulty of franking letters plus a further two letters from the same writer on the same ship (without covers). Illustrated in Royal Marines at page 47.
