Clare WHITE (1903-1997) Gondoliers behind St. Mark's, Venice Watercolour, signed, 36 x 47.5cm. St Ives artist Clare White travelled to Venice regularly in the 1960s and 1970s, and painted every aspect of the city's cultural life - its canals, architechure and street life. Setting up her small easel and stool with watercolours to hand she always painted 'en plein air' and the small, independent english woman was a familiar sight to gondoliers as they went about their business. White commented later that they always liked being painted and puffed up with pride when they knew she was observing them. This composition, due to its perspective, suggests White chose her subject matter for the beautiful stonework and the juxtaposition of classic architecture viewed from a more unusual angle - with the gondoliers perhaps wandering unawares into her picture and setting about their heavy work below.
