William Thomas Greenfield was born in Thornaby in 1864. During the Great War, he was serving as a Donkeyman in the Mercantile Marine. He was sadly killed in action on April 19th 1917, while serving on SS Sowwell. The vessel was a steam cargo ship; she was sunk by German Submarine U-35 170 nautical miles from Gibraltar.
