"Instructions on Needle-work and Knitting As Derived from the Practice Of The Central School of The National Society For Promoting The Education of The Poor In The Principles of The Established Church in the Sanctuary, Westminster", second edition, published by Roake And Varty, etc 1838, the inside cover bears glued in sheet with handwritten letter dated "Septr. 2nd 1848 Jane Haslewood a Mistress on probation respectfully presents a specimen of her needlework and knitting and requests the favour of being promoted to the rank of candidate for a situation" followed by approval by the Matron and a member of the committee of the National Society, the book contains ten samples of needlework including a miniature alphabet and number sampler, a blue printed cotton pinafore; a linen shift-sleeve, miniature stocking and baby bonnet, front cover is loose from spine, staining to interior and tear to upper spine (1 bag) Exceedingly rare: Copac lists only three copies of the second edition (V & A, University College London and the National Trust).
