An equestrian fan dated May 1889 by John Lewis Brown, (1829 – 1890), French with Scottish roots, known for his paintings of horses and dogs and military subjects, this example showing a gathering of horses, carriages and gentry, the verso plain, the double paper leaf mounted on pierced wood sticks, guard approx. 35cm. Another known example by this artist features circus performers and a horse
In used condition, the leaf with one large fold split next to the upper guard and losses to the paper seen from the verso. It does however remain strong.
