English School, (19th century) Shipwreck of the SS Stella off Alderney in 1899, watercolour, 18 x 27cm. * On 30th March 1899 the LSWR passenger steamer Stella was shipwrecked during a voyage from Southampton to the Channel Islands. The ship was due to dock firstly in Guernsey before travelling on to Jersey. On approaching Alderney at full speed she encountered thick fog and struck a submerged reef on the Casquets rocks and sank in just eight minutes. Despite five lifeboats being launched the loss of life was great. Sadly 86 passengers and 19 crew were lost. In recent times the disaster has been dubbed by some as 'The Titanic of the Channel Islands' and a book with that title has been published. Provenance - Private Guernsey collection.
