ARR Paul Lucien Dessau (British, 1909-1999) Presidential Convoy, signed and dated 1963 lower right, oil on board 21.5 x 31 cm, frame 33 x 42 cm Footnote:Convoy made up of two uniformed figures on motorcycles, possibly French gendarmes, followed by a black car bearing a French flag with the Lorraine Cross. 1963 was a historical year for European relationships with French President Charles de Gaulle at the heart of them. On 14 January 1963, Charles de Gaulle held a press conference to announce his opposition to the UK's application to join the European Economic Community. And on 22 January 1963 the Elysee Treaty, intended to consolidate relationship between France and Germany was signed. The previous year was also an eventful time for the French President, as he escaped an assassination at the 'Petit Clamart' with a convoy made up of two motorcyclyst and two black Citroen DS cars.
