TARAWA - A RARE JAPANESE ENVELOPE PICKED OF THE BEACH BY AN AMERICAN MARINE:1943 env (faults) picked up on Betio, Tarawa by a US marine, addressed to "U" Yokosuka P.O. (the gateway P.O. fot the S. Seas)) for forward delivery to "U 57 U 60 U 83(1)" which translates to U57 Moen Island, Truk, U60 4th PO Construction detachment with 83 personnel. The env bears Japanese 7s & 10s. A rare survivor from a Japanese naval unit - as there were never any army personnel on Betio. Note The 4th detachment was mainly a civilian unit and this envelope is addressed to an engineer.
