A 19th century Chinese Mandarin fan in original fitted black lacquer box, the monture of carved sandalwood, fitted with a bi-colour silk tassel, the double paper leaf featuring robed figures with painted ivory faces, the box with cerise silk lining, a bird amongst flowers painted in the lid, the exterior painted in gold with figures and insects, guard approx. 27.5 cm, the box approx. 34cm: together with a silk embroidered Chinese fan sheath, one side black, the other cream, featuring butterflies circling around flowers, and Chinese characters (3). The wood fan has a very damaged gorge but the guards are in good condition. The box is slightly chipped and lacks the lock. The sheath has wear to the silk.
